Letter to the Editor / OUR FUTURE

By Roger C. Kostmayer

Key West may always be a One Human Family community, be proud of its diverse gumbo- like culture, protect its Green quality-of-life environment and have a viable economic base.  But this will only happen if today’s leaders are smart enough to create the right strategic plans, and take the right actions, that get us there.

Key West is fortunate that our Mayor is a remarkable leader, our Commissioners are dedicated public servants, and our US Representative in Washington is a tireless advocate for Monroe County and its values.  This is especially important at a time when our national and state leadership have, in many ways, been abysmal.

What should you and I expect from the individuals we elect, or hire, to lead and protect us?  All of us would be thrilled with contemporary leaders like George Washington, Abe Lincoln or Franklyn D. Roosevelt, but most Americans have more modest expectations.  They want leaders who protect us and put our needs first; who tell us the truth, take responsibility, do their job, and follow the US Constitution. We also have aspirational hopes that leaders, like our current ones, will work together with the intelligence and vision that takes all of us to an even better place in the future.

Tomorrow belongs to those who do the work today.
