LETTER TO THE EDITOR / UKRAINE: WE CAN PAY NOW OR PAY MUCH MORE LATER

By Roger C. Kostmayer

The future price America will have to pay if Putin wins his invasion of Ukraine, will be in human lives; possibly WW III; the loss of international laws that protect sovereign nations; less democracy and freedom.  From day one after Russia’s attack, the US promised Ukraine that we “had their back”, and would supply courageous Ukraine with both defensive and offensive weapons, ammunition, air planes & training, and money to help defeat our, and NATO’s, enemy.

Today, Russia occupies more than 20% of Ukraine, and Ukraine is out of desperately needed ammunition and weapons.  Sadly, the US has not sent supplies and funds to Ukraine for more than a year, due to Republicans in the House of Representatives holding a circular firing squad instead of keeping our nation’s promises and helping Ukraine win.

This fight is not only about Ukraine’s existence as a nation, it’s also about all democracies.  The least the US, NATO and Europe can do is keep their promise to support Ukraine until they win.

The President of the US submitted a request to Congress that included $61.4 billion in both military and economic support for Ukraine.  The chaotic House Republicans blocked the request and appear determined to put partisan leverage before our country, before the civilians being killed, and before our international reputation.

Failure to promptly keep our word to Ukraine, and do what is in the interest of all democracies, would be a dark day in the history of our Not-So-United States.
