Letter to the Editor / TRIBAL XENOPHOBIA
By Roger C. Kostmayer
Alabama Republican leaders, most of whom are evangelical Christians, have come to a moral decision about their profoundly religious Senate candidate, Roy Moore. He is accused of sexually molesting a 14 year old girl and other inappropriate behavior. Moore’s Democrat opponent is a respected Alabama moderate with a clean record and good reputation.
Based on these facts and their religious convictions, Republican leaders in Alabama concluded that if Judge Moore is proven, beyond any reasonable doubt, to have been a sexual predator and child molester, is guilty of one or more felonies, and confesses to all charges, they would unanimously and enthusiastically vote for – – their Republican pedophile, Judge Moore.
This bizarre behavior is called tribal xenophobia, and this kind of valueless partisanship isn’t helpful for our American democracy.

Political cowardice and character assassination aren’t found exclusively on one side of the aisle. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Sentencing one as Guilty before charges are even proven is predatory politics at their worst. Those who embrace such lamentable tactics are despicable political scum.
