LETTER TO THE EDITOR / LYING TO CONGRESS IS A FELONY

Roger C. Kostmayer

Senate Leader McConnell stated the Senate will vote this week on whether Brett Kavanaugh meets the highest standards of truthfulness, character, temperament and nonpartisanship for a lifetime seat on the US Supreme Court.

Currently, there are 51 Senators who caucus with the Republicans, and 49 who caucus with the Democrats. If only one Republican votes with the Ds, it would be 50/50 and the US Vice President would break the tie. But if a net of 2 R’s, for reasons of conscience or Constitutional duty, vote with the D’s, they would control the outcome with a 51/49 majority.

There’s a real possibility that Sen. McConnell would change his tune if he received a letter like the following:

Senator McConnell,

Like you, we’re eager to complete one of our most important responsibilities properly and promptly. The current process of evaluating and giving our most thoughtful advice and consent has been difficult, contentious, partisan and extremely painful to many innocent Americans, including those who have suffered as victims of sexual assault. These facts, and the questionable breadth, depth and rigor of the FBI report we just received, make it impossible for us to properly perform our duty to the President, the Constitution, and to the American people. We require legitimate time and support to question the FBI, study the report, publicly interview witnesses, and issue subpoenas to determine veracity and character.

Without these reasonable requirements we can not, in good conscience, vote affirmatively. This nomination and process, and especially all those whose lives have been, and will continue to be, impacted – are all too important not to get this right.

Respectfully,

Senators Collins, Murkowski, Flake, Corker, Sass and 49 more
