MONROE COUNTY HOSTS HURRICANE IRMA LONG-TERM DISASTER RECOVERY MEETING

MARATHON, FL – While Monroe County has come a long way in the year since Hurricane Irma struck as a Category 4 storm on Sept. 10, 2018, the recovery continues for many residents and businesses.

On Monday, Monroe County hosted a Hurricane Irma Long-Term Disaster Recovery meeting at the Marathon Government Center. About 40 people from government, private sector and nonprofit entities attended to share the status of the many ongoing recovery activities across the Florida Keys.

The meeting’s goal also was to work on strategies to enhance and unify long-term redevelopment initiatives in Monroe County.

“While we have made great strides in the recovery effort, we want to focus our efforts on the continued unmet needs and target opportunities to build a stronger, safer community,” said Helene Wetherington, Monroe County’s Disaster Recovery Director.

Presentations were made regarding a variety of recovery efforts at the federal, state and local level. They included: housing mitigation programs, economic redevelopment initiatives, restoration of environmental/marine resources, infrastructure repair initiatives and the Compass 82 Disaster Case Management Program in the Keys.

The municipalities of Layton, Marathon and Islamorada also provided updates of its recovery efforts.

“It has been a long road, but we all still have a lot of work to do to help in the Keys recovery,” Christine Hurley, Assistant County Administrator with Monroe County, said at the start of the meeting.
