Letter to the Editor / AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION

By Roger C. Kostmayer

Everyone agrees.  Special Prosecutor (SP)  Mueller must be allowed to do his nonpartisan job, present his findings and prosecute those who violated our laws.  One way to insure this happens, and avoid the paralysis of a Constitutional crisis, is for Congress to pass a “Special Prosecutor Protection” law with sufficient votes to prevent a presidential veto.  The President would have to obey the law, or face the consequences.

The obstacle to this clear and simple solution is those Republican Congressmen who privately agree that the SP must not be fired, but publicly are reluctant to take a stand that prevents it.  Their rationale for failing to take timely action in the national interest is that the “White House said the president has no intention of firing Robert Mueller.“

Everyone also agrees that the $1.3 trillion Budget Bill must pass by the deadline – midnight Friday March 23. Based on the erratic and dictatorial behavior of the President, his obsession solely with the welfare of himself and his family, and the looming danger of a Constitutional crisis, it is time for a principled stand by all members of Congress as an equal branch of government.  If the Special Prosecutor Protection Bill is not part of the Budget Bill, no Democrat or Republican should vote for it.

Why take a chance and risk an explosive Constitutional conflict and all the attendant chaos, when rational legislative prevention can solve the problem?
