FKSPCA:  RESCUE TAILS / “KISSES & AVACADO”

BY TAMMY FOX-ROYER
Executive Director Florida Keys SPCA

Many of the animals that come to the FKSPCA stay with us for a very short time until they find their forever homes.  But for one reason or another, some wonderful animals are harder to place and take a bit longer. We’ve had cats as long as five years and dogs as long as three.  They all get great care from our staff and team of over 100 volunteers but we never stop looking for that special home for every one of our special animals.

And that’s where people like Liz Osborn come in.  A long-time supporter of the FKSPCA, her heart responded when she read our Facebook story of  Kisses, a black cat who had spent the first three years of her life at the shelter after coming in as a kitten. Liz, from her home in Ohio, did her own Facebook campaign to find Kisses a home. She created a flyer and spread the word among her friends. She even offered to personally cover the expense of both the adoption AND transport to a new home! Because of Liz’s committed efforts, Kisses is now in a new home, sharing her life with other kitties, a couple of dogs, and a loving human in upstate Florida.

For some people, that would have earned enough good karma to last a lifetime. But Liz is not just anyone. After her success with Kisses, she asked us who else we’d had for a long time, hoping to help another homeless animal. We told her about a cat named Avacado, who had come in as a stray kitten two years ago and like Kisses, grew up in the shelter.

Again, this wonderful woman felt the need to extend herself for an animal. But this time, her efforts involved more direct action. She got in her car and drove to Key West to pick up Avacado! Her intention was to provide a foster home until she could find the right permanent home. But as often happens when fostering, love appeared. Liz decided to keep Avacado herself.  And if you knew Liz, you would know that this is about the best news any cat could get.

The world is a better place because of people like Liz. She gives us hope and inspiration to continue the work we do. Thank you with all our hearts, Liz!
