MONROE COUNTY BOCC SETS RATES FOR NEW ALL ELECTRONIC TOLLING SYSTEM ON CARD SOUND ROAD

KEY LARGO, FL – The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners set the toll rate for the new All Electronic Tolling System on Card Sound Road in Key Largo at 75 cents per axle ($1.50 per car) for two axle vehicles and $1.00 per axle for vehicles with more than two axles.

This is an increase from the 50-cents per axle that was first put in place in 1989 and had been at that rate for decades with the exception of a three -year period from 1992-95 when it was 75 cents per axle. (The original toll was 50-cents per car in 1964).

The BOCC also approved two forms of Card Sound toll discounts at its March meeting at the Murray Nelson Government Center in Key Largo.

The BOCC approved an annual pass of $360 (which is a 50-percent discount based on 480 trips through the toll per year). The BOCC also approved a monthly rebate program in which frequent users with two-axle vehicles receive a 40-percent discount if they make 28 trips or more a month through the toll.

The new tolling system is expected to be in operation on June 2, 2018.

The new toll rate is needed to pay for personnel and maintenance costs for Card Sound Road and the five bridges on it. These costs have increased over time and the annual costs will soon surpass annual revenue.

In addition, the County’s 2014 bridge assessment report states the primary Card Sound Bridge should be scheduled for replacement in 2030 at an estimate price tag of $32 million.

The new toll will accept SunPassâ or drivers will receive a bill in the mail by TOLL-BY-PLATE. Cash is not accepted.

The last hand-collected toll was taken on Aug. 31, 2017. The old toll booth was demolished to make way for the new All Electronic Tolling System.
