Rescue Tail / “Lucky Me!”

By Cathy Baier

We often wonder what draws people to certain animals. From what adopters tell us, it can be for a variety of reasons. Sometimes an animal will remind a person of a favorite companion they had as a child or of a beloved pet from the recent past. Other times it’s the animal’s appearance, such as the blue eyes or the beautiful coat, or a specific breed-type they like. For whatever reason, not every animal is appealing to every person. This is a good thing because it means that ultimately, there could be someone special for everyone!

When Charles came looking for a canine companion, we liked him right away. He was calm, kind, and open-hearted, and we knew whatever dog he chose would be a lucky one. He had been watching our website and when he applied to adopt, he was open-minded about all dogs, although he had a soft spot for bully-breeds. He had a Staffordshire Terrier in the past and was familiar with that breed-type. The first dog he asked about was Mango, a large and very powerful Pitbull (“Pittie”) type. Mango had been returned to the shelter after being in a home for about eight months. His adopter had some life changes and felt he could no longer meet Mango’s needs. Charles met Mango, and we went for a walk. It was obvious that Charles had the ability to control and work with such a powerful dog. He liked Mango, but he also was interested in meeting another dog, Jack.

Jack was a very different dog. He was a hound mix, somewhat independent on first meeting, and not quite the extrovert that Mango was. But he warmed up to Charles quickly and his sweetness became apparent. The two connected enough that now this good man was faced with a dilemma. He liked both dogs, but he had to make a decision. A second visit would be needed . Charles returned another day. After that second meeting and some thought, he decided that Mango was the right dog for him. He told us that his decision was made in part based on each dog’s needs. He knew he could give Jack a good home, but he also realized Mango would have a harder time finding a home, given his breed type, his size, and his power. Charles wanted to do what he could to help a dog, and he knew that his experience, his lifestyle, and his individual capabilities could meet this big boy’s needs and offer him a good life.

Observing an adopter go through the mental and emotional process of choosing a dog is always an experience . However, watching someone base their decision on the wants and needs of the dog is a privilege! Charles is one of those selfless, special adopters whom we are honored to serve. Mango and Charles are enjoying a good life and are looking forward to a long and happy future together. Charles says, “He’s a great dog!”  If all goes as planned, someday Mango will be a ranch dog enjoying wide-open spaces away from Key West. We thank Charles for being who he is and for choosing to adopt!

For anyone wondering about Jack, he is currently in a foster home, waiting for a special person to come along and adopt him.
