Marathon Taxi driver arrested for DUI

A 45-year-old Marathon taxi driver was arrested early Tuesday for drunken driving.

Jan Hans Gasperik was charged with DUI with a breath alcohol level of .20 or higher.

Middle Keys Deputies George Zakariadze and Corbin Hradecky were dispatched to the Brass Monkey bar at 4:05 a.m. regarding an intoxicated man attempting to drive. The reporting person stated they saw a man, later identified as Gasperik, and a female stumbling toward a vehicle. Deputy Zakariadze arrived first and stopped Gasperik from getting inside a sliver Toyota van, from which he operates his personal business, Ahoy Taxi. Gasperik told Deputy Hradecky that he and the female were going to walk home when confronted by the deputies. Gasperik’s speech was slurred, he smelled of alcohol and he stumbling when he walked. The deputies advised neither to drive. The pair walked away.

About a half-hour later, Deputy Hradecky was in the Kmart parking lot and saw the female from the Brass Monkey bar sitting in the Kmart parking lot alone. He then saw the silver Toyota taxi approaching her. Gasperik was driving. Deputy Hradecky conducted a traffic stop.

Gasperik stumbled while exiting the van. He stated multiple times he didn’t understand what was going on when Deputy Hradecky asked him why he was driving given their previous conversation.

Gasperik was taken to jail where he blew a .244 on the alcohol-breath-sensing machine.

The woman was not arrested.
