A FREE READING OF TOBY ARMOUR’S CIVIL WAR PLAYS

“If you want to know about this country called the United States of America, you have to know about the Civil War.”

 –Ken Burns

Fringe Theater, in partnership with the Key West Art and Historical Society, presents a free public reading of Toby Armour’s Civil War Plays at the Old City Hall, located on Greene Street, on Friday, April 6 at 7pm.

This collection of original short plays focuses on the true stories of women and men whose lives were forever changed by the Civil War. Two of the short plays are actually set in our own Key West.  The plays include the stories of a woman who defied social roles and an enslaved man who fought in the war.  “There are hundreds of these kinds of stories,” Toby explains, “but they are most often overlooked.”

Toby Armour’s Civil War Plays is directed by Karen Leonard. The cast of each play includes Mia Schmitt in Rosetta, Suellen Schwobel, and John McDonald in Martha and Daniel, Glenda Donovan in Harriet Ward Foote Hawley, Joanie Sullivan and Chad Newman in Cora and Walter, and Richard Quint in Toby Trout.  Local musicians and period music, organized by Karen Grant, will also be a featured part of the evening.

Toby Armour has facilitated the Fringe’s annual Playwrights in Paradise workshop for the last several years. She was commissioned by the city of Guildford CT to write Civil War plays for their 375th anniversary. “Next came the two Key West plays for Key West’s Civil War Days. By then I was fascinated with the topic. So many personal stories to tell,” concludes Toby.

This event is free. Donations gladly accepted.  Doors open at 6:30. Show begins at 7pm. No ticket or reservation is required. Seating is first come first seated. Old City Hall is located up the stairs at 510 Greene Street. The back entrance (with an elevator) will also be available for use.
