World Habitat Day

Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission, during a recent meeting, recognized World Habitat Day.

The recognition focuses on the basic right to affordable housing and the accomplishments of Habitat for Humanity.

According to the proclamation, 46 percent of families in our community pay half or more of their income on their housing, creating difficult choices between housing, healthcare, nutritious food, school supplies and clothing.

Habitat for Humanity of Key West and the Lower Keys helps families build strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable housing and rentals. Forty eight families have partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Key West and the Lower Keys for affordable home ownership, and an additional 28 families are currently served by providing affordable apartment rentals. In addition, more than 30 families will be assisted with repair of their homes caused by Hurricane Irma.
