Woman severely injured by airplane propeller at the Key West airport

A Naples, Florida woman’s arm and foot were reportedly severed when she was struck by a private airplane propeller approximately 8:45 p.m. Saturday at Key West International Airport.

The woman — her name, age and address was not immediately available — was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island where she was flown in stable condition via Trauma Star to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.

Her condition Sunday morning was not immediately available.

The woman was injured by a private airplane. She was not struck by a commercial aircraft.

According to initial reports: The pilot and female passenger were preparing to taxi in a private airplane when the airplane would not move or was having some other unknown mechanical issue. The pilot exited the airplane while it was still running to see if the airplane was still chalked — if the blocks placed by the airplane tires when it is stationary on the tarmac were still in place.

It was not clear Sunday morning what issue the pilot was having with the airplane when the incident occurred.

The female passenger also exited the airplane and walked to the front of the plane when she was struck by the propeller.

Key West Fire Department crews transported the woman to Lower Keys Medical Center. She was then airlifted to Miami in stable condition at that time.

The Florida Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.
