Two People Die and Trauma Star Transports Two Others to Miami Hospital in Two-Car Collision in The Keys

MILE MARKER 39  ON US 1– Two people died Monday afternoon in the Lower Keys following a head-on collision at Mile Marker 39 of U.S. 1, between the Seven Mile Bridge and Bahia Honda State Park.

Two other people, a 32-year-old male and a 30-year-old female, were airlifted by Monroe County’s air ambulance Trauma Star to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

The collision occurred at about 5:20 p.m., when a car heading northbound and a small pickup truck heading southbound collided, with a combined four passengers.  Stations 11 and 13 of Monroe County Fire Rescue and Station 14 of Marathon Fire Rescue responded, Monroe County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Mark Thompson said.

Trauma Star landed on the Bahia Honda bridge to transport the two survivors. One person died at the scene and one person was transported to Fishermen’s Hospital in Marathon and died.

The Overseas Highway was closed after the crash, with some alternating traffic allowed to pass through. The road was reopened in both directions just before 8 p.m. The names are not being disclosed until family has been notified. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.
