The College of the Florida Keys Graduates Law Enforcement and Correctional Officer Academies

KEY WEST, FL, October 15, 2019—The College of the Florida Keys (CFK) held a graduation ceremony on October 10 for three academies completed through the CFK’s Institute for Public Safety.  A total of 24 cadets—17 in a basic law enforcement academy, five in a correctional officer academy, and two in a correctional officer crossover to law enforcement academy—successfully completed their respective training program.  Upon passing the state certification exam, each will be eligible to become Florida Law Enforcement Officers or Correctional Officers.

Through partnerships with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Key West Police Department, 23 graduates have already secured employment.  During the ceremony, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay swore in 12 cadets and Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg swore in 11 cadets, inducting them into their new professions.

Cathy Torres, Director of CFK’s Institute for Public Safety, recognized top performing graduates with special accolades.  Leadership awards were given to class captains: Joelle Deese and Michael McFadden.  Denis Agleev, Ziyah Jefferson, and Zachary Gilroy were recognized for academic achievement.  “Top Gun” honors went to Christian Bozzetti and Terrence Huxable for superior shooting skills.  Raymond Roscoe, Amie Szymanski, and James Gardner, Jr. received Physical Fitness awards and the “PIG” awards, which recognize pride, integrity, and guts, went to Jeffrey Bennett, Jr., Garnder, Jr., and Elam Thornbrugh.

CFK’s law enforcement and correctional officer programs satisfy the training requirements of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.  CFK is currently accepting applications for two upcoming basic law enforcement academies, which will begin in January—one at the College’s Key West Campus and the other at its Upper Keys Center.  All of the classes are part-time, in the evening.  Applications are due December 6.  For more information about CFK’s Institute for Public Safety, visit the College’s website at http://www.fkcc.edu/academics/basicrecruit/.
