Stolen handgun recovered during traffic stop

A 19-year-old Key West man was arrested Wednesday night after he was found to be in possession of a stolen 9mm GLOCK® handgun and a Oxycodone pill after a traffic stop on Key Haven Road on Stock Island.

Abraham Amado Acosta was charged with possessing a stolen firearm, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, driving with a suspended license and possession of a pill without a prescription.

Traffic Enforcement Unit Deputy Edward Swogger was conducting traffic enforcement in Key Haven about 6 p.m. when he saw a Nissan Altima traveling 40 mph in a 25 mph zone on Key Haven Road. He stopped the car. Acosta was the driver. There were no passengers. Deputy Swogger determined Acosta’s driver’s license had been suspended in March for failure to pay previous traffic citations. Acosta was placed in the rear of Deputy Swogger’s patrol vehicle.

A search of the Nissan Altima turned up:

  • One loaded GLOCK® 43 handgun under the front passenger seat;
  • One Oxycodone pill in a sunglass holder in the headliner.

Deputy Swogger determined the gun had been reported stolen in July 2018 from a residence on Summerland Key.

Acosta was taken to jail.
