Stock Island couple arrested after month of crime

A 36-year-old man and 27-year-old woman were arrested over the weekend after a month of crimes that included battery, burglary and assault.

Yasmany Santana 36, of Stock Island, faces a litany of charges that include: Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery, property damage, burglary with assault and battery, resisting arrest and failure to appear in court.

Santana had been living with Jami Ana Tumm, 27, in Roy’s Trailer Park on Stock Island. Tumm was also arrested over the weekend and she faces charges of grand theft, battery, battery on a person 65-years-old or older, property damage, burglary with assault and battery resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The cases began on April 11, thereupon Deputies responded to the 40 block of 8th Street on Stock Island at 5 p.m. They met a 73-year-old female who stated her granddaughter, Tumm, came into her residence and began to argue with her. Tumm stated she had nowhere to go and that her boyfriend, Yasmany, was beating her. The woman told Tumm she needed to report these crimes to law enforcement, but Tumm declined. The woman told Tumm that Tumm could not stay at her residence. Tumm then became violent. Tumm threw water at the woman and began smashing pictures. The woman stated she wished to press charges.

Shortly thereafter, Deputies were flagged down by two males at Bernstein Park. The males stated they left a backpack unattended near the blue turf workout area while they went for a jog. The backpack contained two iPhones, a wallet and some athletic gear that totaled $1,250. Deputies canvassed the area, but found no suspects.

Detective Ken Fricke and Sgt. David Fernandez reviewed park security footage two days later and spotted a female on the video leaving the park wearing the stolen backpack whom they identified as Tumm from previous encounters with law enforcement. Detective Fricke went the Tumm’s grandmother’s house on 8th Street. The grandmother stated Tumm was wearing the same clothes as seen on the video and had a black backpack with her. Tumm reportedly attempted to leave the backpack there, but the grandmother made her leave with it. The grandmother stated she believed Tumm then went to a residence at Roy’s Trailer Park.

Deputies went to a trailer at Roy’s Trailer Park at 11:20 p.m. Saturday after receiving a tip that Santana and Tumm were living there. Santana had a warrant for failure to appear and Tumm had a warrant for backpack theft earlier in the month. The door swung open, but Santana quickly grabbed it and slammed it shut. Deputies could hear arguing inside. The Deputies were then flagged down by someone stating his room had just been ransacked. The man lived in the back apartment of the trailer the Deputies were trying to enter. Deputies entered and found a door separating the front and rear apartments in the trailer badly damaged. Santana and Tumm apparently broke through the wall/door separating the two apartments in the trailer.

The male stated he was in his rear apartment with his three children, ages 10, 13, 14, when Santana and Tumm smashed through the wall. The man stated both suspects pushed his three children to the ground and fled through a door to the outside. Deputies cleared the trailer, called a Key West Police K9 Unit for assistance and searched the surrounding area, but did not find either suspect. One of the children said the suspects locked them in the their apartment in an effort to keep law enforcement from gaining entry. A bag containing cocaine residue was found where Santana and Tumm were living.

On Sunday, at 7 p.m., Deputies on 5th Avenue on Stock Island, spotted Santana. Santana fled and jumped into the water and attempted to hide under a dock in Safe Harbor. Key West Police, The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and U.S. Coast Guard assisted in the subsequent search. Santana was then spotted on land fighting with a resident who was attempting to detain him. Santana then jumped back in the water. Deputies, FWC and Key West  Police Officers eventually found and detained Santana after finding him hiding between a boat a sea dock.

Santana was taken to jail.

Later Sunday at 11 p.m., Key West Police Officers were called to McDonald’s on North Roosevelt Boulevard where Tumm had been standing in the drive through window asking to use a phone. Key West Police Officers then called Deputies.

Tumm described the incident at Roy’s Trailer Park the night prior: She and her boyfriend Santana were inside a trailer that was divided into multiple apartments and contained multiple families. Santana was making crack cocaine and noticed Deputies outside. Santana ran into the bedroom after slamming the front door shut and locking it. Tumm followed Santana into the bedroom and watched him forcibly bust through the wall into the neighboring apartment. Santana then ran through the door and out of the trailer. Tumm stated she followed.  Tumm then ran to a hiding spot to meet with Santana.  Tumm stated upon meeting up with Santana, they started arguing. Tumm then stated Santana dragged her by her hair and that she was punched in the face, kicked and bit. Tumm stated she was finally able to get away and ran in the opposite direction of Santana after a light was pointed at them.

Key West Police took Tumm to Lower Keys Medical Center for treatment of broken ribs.

Tumm was taken to jail after she was cleared at the hospital.
