SPEAKER CORCORAN AND CHAIRMAN PAUL RENNER JOIN GOVERNOR SCOTT IN CALL FOR CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT PROTECTING TAXPAYERS

Amendment Would Require Super Majorities in the Legislature to Raise Taxes

Tallahassee, FL – Today, Speaker of the Florida House, Richard Corcoran along with House Ways and Means Committee Chairman, Paul Renner, released the following statements in support of Governor Scott’s call for a constitutional amendment requiring super majorities to pass any future tax increases.

In voicing his support, Speaker Corcoran said, “For almost seven years we’ve worked alongside our Governor to bring common sense back to governing. We cut taxes. We cut regulations. We cut fees. Now we need to make sure the taxpayers’ pocketbooks are protected. Requiring in the Constitution a super majority to raise any tax or fee will do this. It’s pro-family, pro-future, pro-worker, and pro- taxpayer. It’s anti-government waste, anti-politician, and anti-pork barrel spending. I’m proud to offer my support to Governor Scott on this bold initiative and will do all I can to see that it is successful.”

Chairman Renner went on to say, “I’m proud to support this initiative. As Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee in the House, I look forward to working with the Speaker and my colleagues to provide Floridians the opportunity to vote on this much-needed amendment.  Florida is a place of prosperity and opportunity because we have put our trust in free people and free markets, refusing to follow the high tax, high regulation, and big spending states who mortgage their children’s tomorrow to overspend today. This amendment, along with our requirement to balance the budget, will help protect Florida’s long-term economic future.”

Since Governor Scott and Speaker Corcoran were elected in 2010, conservative, free market principles and policies helped create an environment that led to the creation of 1.4 million new jobs, the elimination of over 5000 unnecessary and burdensome regulations, the paying down $7.6 billion in debt, the cutting of taxes 75 times, and returned $7 billion to taxpayers – whose money it is in the first place – in tax cuts.

This proposed amendment will solidify these gains for the people of Florida and prevents future tax hikes that would endanger jobs and the livelihood of Florida families.
