Sheriff’s Office program aimed at educating drivers of left lane law in effort to reduce crashes

The Sheriff’s Office will be looking for motorists illegally traveling in the left lane as part of an initiative to curb crashes and educate drivers on this often misunderstood law.

In an effort to also reduce aggressive driving, Deputies will be out in large numbers warning motorists that the left lane is primarily for passing or turning.

Florida law states that vehicles are to be driven on the right half of the roadway, with some exceptions such as  when passing another vehicle, when avoiding an obstruction in the road or when a diver is preparing to turn left, to name a few examples.

More information and a full transcript of the law is available at www.flhsmv.gov/safety-center/driving-safety/the-right-lane/

Deputies will be out throughout the holidays educating drivers.

As usual, we expect more and more visitors during the holidays and the winter season.

Be safe and help us spread the word.

Woman arrested for assault

A 61-year-old Tavernier woman was arrested Wednesday for threatening a man with a piece of rebar.

Lou Ann Steed Buschlen was charged with aggravated assault.

There were no reported injuries.

A neighbor/victim and his wife were driving on an easement near their residence on the 88000 block of the Overseas Highway when Buschlen reportedly struck the vehicle with her hand as the couple was driving by.

Buschlen then approached the male victim in the vehicle while holding a piece of rebar and screaming for the couple to get off her property.

An argument ensued between the male and Buschlen. Buschlen threatened him with the piece of rebar. The victim was able to take the rebar from Buschlen and leave the scene.

There is a history between both parties over the easement and the Sheriff’s Office has been called to the area on multiple previous occasions.

Buschlen was taken to jail.
