School security assessments beginning

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Monroe County School District will be conducting a security assessment at Sugarloaf School, 255 Crane Boulevard, Sugarloaf Key, beginning roughly 7 a.m. Tuesday and throughout the morning.

The assessment is being done in light of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, which requires local law enforcement and school districts to evaluate and improve safety and security in Florida schools.

Students, parents, faculty and residents will see an increased law enforcement presence at Sugarloaf School and should not be alarmed.

Similar assessments will be conducted at each school in the district. Sugarloaf School is the first.
