SALT Gallery features Conch artist Tony Campo through May

Through the end of May, SALT Gallery (830 Fleming St., www.saltislandprovisions.com) will feature a new collection of vibrant acrylic paintings by local artist Tony Campo. To celebrate Tony’s new works, SALT will be hosting an opening reception at the gallery from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18th.

Tony is a fifth generation Conch – a true Key West native. His ancestors immigrated to the island from Cuba in the mid-1800s to work in the booming cigar industry. A lifelong friend of Campo’s great grandfather, Mario Sanchez – a renowned Cuban-American folk artist – encouraged a young Tony to pursue his dreams as an artist.

With his family’s deep roots in Key West, it’s no surprise that Tony grew up around local art legends, like Sal Salinero and George Carey, who were friends of the family. Tony uses his hometown’s eclectic backdrops, as well as its colorful cast of characters, to influence his work. He incorporates the vibrant Caribbean palette into each masterpiece he creates.

Tony’s paintings have been exhibited in different venues around Key West, including 7 Artists & Friends, and he has featured at multiple group art shows and festivals from the Keys to the mainland. His works electrify the walls in many Key West homes.

“Tony’s paintings are quintessential Key West – vibrant, playful, and hugely impactful from a visual standpoint,” says gallery owner Laura Richardson. “You always know a Tony Campo original when you see it! We are so thrilled to not only feature a homegrown Key West artist but one of such immense talent at SALT this month.”

SALT Gallery features an eclectic collection of local art, local sea salts, jewelry, pottery, wine, and Florida Keys honey. Gallery owners Maria Sharpe and Laura Richardson feature a new artist each month at SALT. Tony’s work will remain on display until May 31st.
