RESCUE TAILS: AN FKSPCA SUCCESS STORY “SNICKERS”

BY TAMMY FOX-ROYER
Executive Director Florida Keys SPCA

We first found Snickers after he had been abandoned on Rat Key with no food, no water, and no future. He was the only one in his litter of rabbits to have survived after being dumped by the side of the road. When domesticated rabbits are “set free,” they are most often killed by predators, cars or starvation. Snickers was one of the few lucky ones.

A kind soul helped trap him and he was brought to the shelter where he regained his weight and his health.  But it took over a year for the next miracle to happen.

Jean and her husband, Chad, had been thinking about getting a house rabbit for a long time. When Jean saw Snickers’ photo in one of our outreach programs, she immediately fell for him. It wasn’t long before she was packing him up to take him home.

Snickers instantly became a member of the family. According to Jean, “He lays around like a dog. He kisses us and nudges my hand for petting. He is so lovable. He crawls under my chin and tries to sit on my shoulder. He is one amazing rabbit!”

We couldn’t ask for a better update and endorsement of life with a house rabbit. Thank you so much, Jean and Chad!

And please, no animal deserves to be dumped by the side of the road. If you have or know of an animal that cannot properly be cared, please come to the FKSPCA. We will help find a loving forever home.
