“OLD TIME KITTY”

In November 2015, Alison lost her cat, Sam, in the vicinity of Sandy’s Café. For two months, Alison looked everywhere but Sam was nowhere to be found. Due to work and family obligations, Alison had to return to Maine – but she did not give up hope.

Every week, Alison checked the FKSPCA’s website in the hope that Sam would be found. As the months stretched on, Alison began to lose hope of ever finding her beloved pet again.

Fast forward to 2017, when a local property manager brings a cat to the shelter in Key West with a large wound on its side. “Old Time Kitty” was a community cat that was fed by the neighborhood and seemed to belong to no one. We treated the cat for its injuries and when he recovered, placed him up for adoption and put his photo on our website.

Back in Maine, Alison had stopped checking the website for Sam but “just had a feeling one day” and tried again. Miraculously, she saw the photo of Old Time Kitty and knew in an instant that it was Sam. Via email and phone calls, we confirmed that Alison was correct and that Sam had finally been found.

Now the challenge was to re-unite the family. Alison could not afford to travel to Key West, especially since Sam needed some additional medical attention. But Pilots and Paws came to the rescue and flew Sam to Orlando, where he will be fostered until another flight can be arranged to Maine. By the time this story is published, Sam and Alison should be joyously reunited.

It took a lot of people to make this happen – the neighbors who fed Sam, the property manager who brought Sam to the shelter, our hard-working shelter staff, the vets who treated Sam and the pilots who flew Sam home. But if you’ve ever lost a pet – you know that the effort is worth it.
