A small, 1981 Beechcraft airplane (tail number N41VK) skidded off a Summerland Key Cove Airport, 200 W. Shore Drive, runway about 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Florida Highway Patrol is the primary investigating agency. Federal aviation authorities may also be a part of that investigation.

The pilot, identified as 66-year-old Raymond Crawford, told first responders he had a mechanical issue which prevented the prop plane from getting airborne whilst on the runway.

The pilot stated he shut down power, applied brakes and skidded off the runway into a yard at 16 S. Airport Drive.

There were no fuel leaks or similar hazards reported, though about 50 pounds of fuel were pumped out from the aircraft as a precaution.

There were no serious injuries reported.
