New Hope for the Dems
By Rick Boettger
It’s shockingly simple: Dems can keep all of their liberal/progressive principles, if only they just dump their now-toxic, defunct democratic party.
This occurred to me while reading a local op-ed writer like myself, but a true Blue: he defended the Constitution, the 1st and 5th Amendments, without mentioning the Red/Blue divide even once. This is epic. It shows that while you cannot fix the current party leadership, or the left media, there is hope for the electorate to come to the rescue.
I also read in one of my independent journals that they blamed the Biden fiasco not only on the Party leadership and the Blue media, but on the Blue electorate. But that is not fair. While not a single Dem leader except the exiled Dean Phillips* spoke the truth everyone knew about Biden, and none of the Left media let a discouraging word go uncensored, 67% of surveyed Dems thought his ability to govern was “severely limited.” And that was BEFORE the debate, which only raised it to 70%, because the debate didn’t show them anything they didn’t already know.
This shows that only 30% of Dems are fully “resisting!”, their party right or wrong. They will not change, and are all the support the old Dems and left media need to keep power. This is not remarkable: even in the hard sciences, no one changes their mind once they file their PhD thesis. No senior scientist followed Galileo. Only when the new generation of astronomers had to decide between the earth- or sun-centric theories, did the science follow Galileo.**
So now the Blue hope is for the future. The young people who show up at Dem conclaves realize this, seeing that even when they get one of their own, David Hogg, elected to a leadership position, the old guard will rig even the past election to get rid of him–righteously protecting the right of their oldest losers to keep their safe seats. (Hogg wanted to challenge them with younger candidates in the discarded system of what they called “primaries,” back when the voters, not the back-room politicos, chose their candidates.)
The Dems lost 10% of the youth vote between 2020 and 2024 in the swing states. While Dems are keeping their old True Blues, the uncommitted youth entering the electorate are not going their way. The left’s hope is they carry their normally progressive inclinations towards a new, winning coalition.
*MSNBC never interviewed him, only mentioning his name to slam him for running a “strange, rudderless campaign.” If you ever heard him, as I did on NewsNation, he was easily the Dems’ best candidate. He would have crushed Trump in any debate, maybe carried 40 states. A wealthy Minnesota house member, our government lost him, one of the good ones we wish would run for the common good.
