My day usually starts by sorting through messages, emails, and the news. The next stop is Key West Lue’s column in Konk Life. Sadly, this delightful column has gone dark for many weeks. In the past, despite Lou’s many serious health issues, the column lapses have been brief. However, this time the long pause suggests that he has been quite sick. Therefore, I am writing this note of gratitude with some urgency.

Since his writings are so transparent his readers already know what Key West Lou is about. Here are some examples:

  1. There has been a recent trend in the media to blame our present political crisis on Democrats who have been labeled as elitist, weak, out of touch wimps. Lou, whose views certainly have veered to the left on most issues, is the antithesis of these characterizations.
  2. The Golden Rule seems to be folded into his take on most issues.
  3. He seems to get truly energized about meeting new people and welcoming back old friends to Key West.
  4. He must be the King of Happy Hours. Who else gets to leave with scones for breakfast (a happy hour first)?
  5. He loves everything about Syracuse basketball and football—except their win/loss records.
  6. He has seemingly visited every Greek island that is accessible by sea or air.
  7. He has proudly broadcast every triumph attained by a family member.
  8. He is not immune to quirks. Why would anyone rely only upon a vintage portable electric heater to get him through the coldest winter nights?

Even though I never met or talked with Lou, what I see on this book’s cover is exactly what I know is inside: a very smart, kind, intuitive guy with the mental oomph to enjoy life to its fullest. He has bounced back from serious health issues so many times I am counting on seeing his column emerge again. This reader is very grateful to him for sharing his daily thoughts in a way that make his mornings substantially brighter.
