Mucarsel-Powell and 2020 Candidates to Visit Homestead Child Detention Facility and Address Media

On Friday, June 28 at 9 a.m., U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26) will be joined by 2020 Democratic presidential candidates at the migrant children’s detention facility in Homestead, Fla.

On Monday, Mucarsel-Powell called on the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates to visit the facility during their time in South Florida and call attention to the Trump administration’s cruel policies that are separating children from their families.

Rep. Mucarsel-Powell has been an outspoken advocate on the issue of child separations. She recently exposed the Trump administration’s lack of a hurricane preparedness plan for the detention facility and joined South Florida U.S. Reps. Donna Shalala and Debbie Wasserman Schultz in calling for the closure of the Homestead detention facility.

Mucarsel-Powell has also called for the resignation of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar for the Department’s gross mishandling of the facility, the failure to provide a safe and secure environment for migrants, the lack of an adequate hurricane preparedness plan and the deaths of several children while in custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement.
