A 21-year-old Stock Island man was arrested Monday night after striking a fire hydrant with a pickup truck and leaving the scene — causing approximately $50,000 to $60,000 in water damage at the 2nd Street and Maloney Avenue intersection.

Robert Izquierdo was charged with leaving the scene of a crash.

Deputy Kathleen Donavon was dispatched to the 5600 block of Maloney Avenue at 11 p.m. regarding a red Ford pickup truck driving on the sidewalk that hit a fire hydrant. The resulting flooding caused the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority to turn off water to some customers. The driver of the truck, later identified as Izquierdo, was seen by a witness leaving the area on foot.

Deputy Donavon found the truck parked on 1st Street. It was covered in water and mud and was heavily damaged consistent with hitting a fire hydrant. The registration came back to Izquierdo. Deputy Donavon found Izquierdo at his residence on Stock Island. Other people at the house stated Izquierdo arrived home with wet and muddy clothes. Izquierdo told Deputy Donavon he been drinking a White Claw alcoholic beverage, a half-full can of which was found in the truck.

Izquierdo was taken to jail.

Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority officials/workers told Deputy Donavon that much of the asphalt at 2nd Street and Maloney Avenue was lifting due to the amount of water coming from the hydrant, causing debris to get underneath the roadway, adding the section of the road will likely have to be replaced.
