Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Explorers remember the fallen

The Sheriff’s Office Explorer Honor Guard and other Florida Keys law enforcement and military personnel conducted a memorial ceremony Saturday at Marathon Community Park to remember those who have fallen in the line of duty.

The names of each Florida-based officer who died in service in the last year was read.

The Explorer Honor Guard unit consist of Explorers from all three Explorer post in Monroe County. The current team are students from all three high schools in Monroe County. Coral Shores, Marathon, and Key West High schools. Marathon Middle/High School Resource Officer Derick Velez has training with the Explorers for weeks and led the move to integrate all the Keys high schools in forming the new Honor Guard.

Nationally, 135 officers were killed in the line of duty in 2017. In Florida, ten officers were killed. Monroe County did not lose an officer in 2017.
