Monroe County Fire Rescues Helps 37 Cuban Migrants Who Were Dropped Off By A Boat in Lower Sugarloaf Key

Monroe County Fire Rescue arrived at Sugarloaf Boulevard at County Road 939A to the cheers of 37 migrants from Cuba.

“I have never seen so many at once,” Battalion Chief Francisco Perez said. “They were very happy to see us. They said they had been on the ocean for two days.”

A boat dropped them off on the ocean side of Lower Sugarloaf Key, about 20 miles from Key West, at about 6:15 p.m. Monday and left.

Three of the Cubans — a male, pregnant female and 4-year-old girl — were transported to Lower Keys Medical Center. Perez said the girl suffered from dehydration and seasickness.

The fire and rescue personnel responded from Sugarloaf, Big Coppitt and Cudjoe stations and waited with the remaining Cubans for the arrival of U.S. Border Patrol.
