Meeting Friday for Haitian TPS Information

City Commissioner Sam Kaufman, during Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, urged the community to turn out for an informational meeting Friday regarding changes in national policy for the temporary protection status of Haitians in this country.

The meeting is at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 23rd at the Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea, 724 Truman Avenue.

According to Kaufman’s presentation, there are about 50,000 Haitians living in the U.S. for seven years under the protective status. The policy was initially granted in 2010 due to horrendous hardships following the massive earthquake in the island nation, and has been extended. The current administration has extended the policy for another six months.

Kaufman said he is especially urging the Haitian community in Key West to attend. The presentation is sponsored by Catholic Charities, Monroe Ministries and Catholic Legal Services of the Archdiocese of Miami.
