Man dies following snorkeling incident

A 61-year-old North Weymouth, Massachusetts man died following a snorkeling incident Saturday on Alligator Reef off Islamorada.

Patrick Alan Martinec was snorkeling with Sundance Watersports when he began signaling for help in the water at approximately 2:20 p.m.

He was brought back to the vessel where the crew began CPR and took him ashore.

Martinec was taken to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier where he was pronounced dead.

Foul play is not expected to be a factor in the investigation.

Autopsy results are pending.


Body found in waters off Key West identified  

A liveaboard removed from the water near Wisteria Island at approximately 12:15 p.m. Friday has been identified as 67-year-old John Vincent Leonard formerly of Lakeland, Florida.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission transported the body to U.S. Coast Guard Station Key West after a good Samaritan reported finding Leonard.

The case remains under investigation and foul play is not expected to be a factor.

Autopsy results are pending.


Man arrested for illegally spearing an undersized snook   

A 35-year-old Miami man was cited Saturday with illegally spearing a snook near Tavernier Creek.

The Sheriff’s Office was conducting marine patrols on the bayside at approximately 3:45 p.m. when a speared, undersized snook was found to be in Jesus Alejandro Pinero-Lopez’s possession.

Pinero-Lopez admitted to the violation and was taken to jail.
