Man arrested in knife attack

A 25-year-old Stock Island man who swung a knife at multiple people Thursday night was arrested.

Arnoldo Lazaro Vega was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

There were no serious injuries reported.

Deputy Kathleen Donavon responded to 9th Avenue and 5th Street at 8 p.m. regarding a man on a motorized bicycle who was “acting crazy.” The reporting person there said the suspect, later identified as Vega, was making statements about shooting law enforcement officers. Vega then stated he was going to get a gun, come back, and kill the reporting person. The reporting person said Vega had already left the scene. Deputy Donavon found Vega at a nearby house at 11th Avenue and 5th Street. A motorized bicycle matching the description the reporting person gave was also at that location.

Vega was acting in an aggressive manner. Deputy Donavon called for additional deputies to respond to her location. Deputy Donavon detained Vega. Vega did not have any weapons in his possession. The reporting person stated he didn’t want to press charges. Deputy Donavon told Vega to stay away from 9th Avenue and 5th Street, but that he was otherwise free to go.

Shortly thereafter, Deputy Donavon drove a short distance away and began writing notes in her patrol car when she was approached by a frantic woman who stated Vega had just pulled a knife on her and several other people and tried to slash them. As Deputy Donavon was talking to the woman, Vega approached riding on the motorized bicycle. Deputy Donavon again detained Vega and placed him in the back of her patrol car. Multiple deputies were now on scene. The woman stated she wished to press charges against Vega.

Deputies canvassed the area and found a black steak knife matching the description given by witnesses.

Vega was taken to jail.
