Man arrested for DUI after hitting bridge

A 33-year-old Cudjoe Key man was arrested early Monday morning after striking the side of the Seven Mile Bridge and leaving the scene.

Brian David Williams was charged with DUI with property damage, DUI with a .15 blood-alcohol content or higher and hit and run with property damage.

Deputy Corbin Hradecky received a be-on-the-lookout alert at approximately 12 a.m. regarding a reckless driver on the Seven Mile Bridge. A reporting party stated a northbound blue car was driving in a “zig zag” pattern on the bridge and then struck a concrete jersey barrier on the right side near Mile Marker 41 or 42. The reporting person stated the blue car then began driving northbound in the southbound lane.

Deputy Hradecky got behind the blue Mitsubishi near Mile Marker 44 whereupon it immediately slowed its speed to below 20 mph. Deputy Hradecky performed a traffic stop after witnessing the suspect car nearly strike a southbound vehicle head-on.

The driver, later identified as Williams, smelled of alcohol and appeared to be intoxicated. Williams stated he had too much to drink and should not have been driving. There were open cans of alcoholic beverage in the car. He subsequently failed field sobriety exercises.

He was taken to jail where he blew a .179 on the breath-sensing machine.

Williams was booked into jail.

The blue Mitsubishi was damaged on the right side in a manner consistent with striking the bridge. Parts from the car were also found and removed from the roadway.
