Man arrested following brief pursuit

A 30-year-old Duck Key man was arrested at gunpoint in Marathon late Saturday night after fleeing from deputies attempting to make a traffic stop.

Richard Jose Rodriguez was charged with fleeing and eluding and possession of marijuana.

Deputy Joel Torres was near 109th Street at 11:48 p.m. when he saw a Ford Explorer with only one working headlight. He got behind the SUV and turned on his emergency lights. The SUV turned onto 109th Street and quickly accelerated. Deputy Torres turned on his siren as well. The SUV made a series of turns during the course of the brief pursuit. The pursuit ended on the 10000 block of Aviation Blvd. where the driver, later identified as Rodriguez, had stopped.

Deputy Torres ordered Rodriguez out of the SUV with his service gun drawn. Rodriguez was taken into custody without further incident. There were no reported injuries.

Rodriguez told Deputy Torres he was on probation and there was marijuana in the SUV. Rodriguez stated he had multiple felony convictions including grand theft of an automobile and armed burglary.

A plastic bag with 25.8 grams of marijuana was found in the SUV.

Rodriguez was taken to jail.
