Letter to the Editor / PROTECT ODESSA & TIP THE SCALES

By Roger C. Kostmayer

Why shouldn’t the US and NATO navies (plus available Ukrainian vessels), that have trained together, protect the key city of Odessa and the Ukrainian coast on the Black Sea?  It appears obvious that Russia is targeting Odessa and is preparing for an amphibious invasion to further strangle Ukraine.

This highly skilled and equipped NATO fleet, operating legally in international waters and requested by Ukraine, should be legal and a dominant military force in favor of Ukraine.  Currently, Russia is free to send bombs and missiles from ships that deliberately kill civilian women, children and the elderly trapped in the coastal towns- with impunity. The cruelty of Russian tactics includes starving trapped civilians who are also dying from lack of potable water and emergency healthcare.  The powerful US/NATO fleet could take control of the defined area, impose a no-fly/ no warship zone for humanitarian reasons while providing ship to ship and ship to shore protection for all vessels and civilians.  This would prevent a Russian amphibious assault and barbaric genocide tactics while simultaneously making sure Ukraine has sufficient anti-ship missiles to coordinate and complement with the fleet.  This would protect both Ukraine and nearby Moldova and prevent Russia from closing down all access to the sea by other than Russia.

This strategy, if successful, could tip the scales and end Putin’s capability to subjugate Ukraine and turn that nation into a mere vassal state under Putin’s heel.
