Law Enforcement Academy Graduation

The Florida Keys Community College Basic Law Enforcement Academy on Friday graduated the most recent class of new officers at the San Carlos Institute. Among those were five recruits sponsored by the Key West Police Department: JT Conaty, Jose DaSilva, Brett DeHanas, Jessie Torrecillas, and Anthony Gillespie. Five recruits were sponsored by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office: Michael Ciprian, Paolo Cisneros-Montes, Jenna Moeller, Shannon O-Connell, and Eric Viergutz. Two graduates put themselves through the Academy and will be joining other law enforcement agencies: Ian Douthirt and Christopher Schwartz.

Following the graduation ceremony, Key West Police Chief Donie Lee swore in the new members of the department.

The Key West Police Department is honored to welcome the following new officers:

Officer Jay Conaty has lived in Key West for seven years. He served in the US Air Force and has a BS degree in Aviation.

Officer Jose DaSilva has also lived in Key West for seven years. He retired from the US Coast Guard and also served in the US Marine Corp. He has a BA degree in Intelligence Studies and most recently worked for DCF.

Officer Brett DeHanas, also here for seven years, was an Engineer in the Army National Guard and has a BS degree in Criminal Justice.

Officer Jessie Torrecillas has been here 13 years. He served in the US Navy as military law enforcement. He is dual certified Corrections/LEO and he most recently worked for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in the jail.

Officer Anthony Gillespie has been in Key West for almost 13 years. He has extensive life experience beyond his years and is an experienced boat captain.
