Large amount of cash found after motorist flees on U.S. 1

A 25-year-old Cape Coral, Florida man was arrested Sunday, and more than $27,000 cash was found after the man fled from the Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Highway Patrol.

“I want to thank the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office as well as the Florida Highway Patrol for getting this dangerous person off the streets before he injured someone,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay.

Odelin Regis was charged with DUI, fleeing and eluding, as well as multiple traffic violations, including reckless driving.

The Sheriff’s Office observed a Corvette traveling more than 100 mph near Mile Marker 35 at approximately 12 p.m. The Sheriff’s Office received numerous 911 calls from other motorists regarding the Corvette as Regis fled from the Sheriff’s Office and the FHP while committing numerous traffic violations. He failed to stop despite multiple attempts by both agencies.

The vehicle’s tires were successfully spiked at the Channel Two Bridge. The vehicle stopped near Mile Marker 74, however, the driver, Regis, fled on foot. He was apprehended shortly thereafter. A female passenger in the vehicle was not arrested. It was later determined the Corvette was a rental.

The following were found:

  • $27,300 cash
  • 3.3 grams of cocaine
  • Approximately 2.8 ounces of marijuana

Regis was taken to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier and then transported to a Miami hospital due to ingesting pills and cocaine while he was fleeing. His immediate condition on Monday was not clear.

A loaded .45-caliber handgun was found near the Channel Two Bridge after Regis was taken into custody. Whether or not Regis disposed of that firearm while he was fleeing from law enforcement remains under investigation.
