Keys to be the Change Mentoring Month

City Commissioner Sam Kaufman, during last week’s City Commission meeting, proclaimed January as Keys to be the Change Mentoring Month.

January has been set aside as National Mentoring Month to celebrate the vital role that mentors play in providing crucial support and guidance to young adults as they grow and develop into the next generation of citizens and leaders.

Keys to Be the Change, established in 2014, provides students with mentoring programs that empower them to make positive changes in their lives and in their community. It provides reading literacy mentors to students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

The Key West Police Department, the United States Coast Guard and the State Attorney’s Office all provide mentoring sessions to at-risk youth

“The organization promises the support of a caring mentor who meets weekly at school to build self-esteem, self-worth and self-confidence,” reads the proclamation, “which empower our youth to make healthy choices in their lives. The work of Keys to Be the Change mentors results in a success rate of over 70 percent reducing truancy and increasing grades of mentees in all of their programs.”
