Key West Mayor Danise “DeeDee” Henriquez and Police Chief Sean Brandenburg were honored to join members of the Monroe County School Board and students of May Sands Montessori School today as they unearthed a 50-year old time capsule. The capsule was buried during the country’s Bicentennial and now was opened on the country’s Semi quincentennial.

The letter containing the location of the time capsule has been held safely with the Key West City Clerk for 50 years.

After the unearthing, the school district started another capsule to be buried for another 25 years. Mayor Henriquez and Chief Brandenburg were honored to donate the first items in the new piece of Key West history. The Mayor wrote a letter to the future and donated a City challenge coin with the names of all of the commissioners. Chief Brandenburg contributed a Key West Police challenge coin and a shoulder patch.
