Key West Sunrise Rotary doubles value of scholarships

Beginning this year, students awarded Key West Sunrise Rotary scholarships will now receive twice as much financial assistance as previous recipients. The club’s foundation board recently voted to double the amount of each of its five scholarships given annually to Key West High School graduates. Combined with its annual donation to Take Stock in Children, Key West Sunrise Rotary now provides $70,000 toward the educational needs of local students.

“Education is a primary focus for our club and the students are so deserving. We want to thank our community for being so generous in support of our club’s fundraising efforts so that we may offer this valuable assistance as the students pursue their dreams,” said Key West Sunrise Rotary Foundation President Stan Rzad.

The club’s four-year scholarships – the Sunrise Rotary Scholarship, the Ecky Solomon/Glynn Archer Memorial Scholarship and the Sunrise Rotary Memorial Scholarship – increase to $8,000, $5,000 and $4,000, respectively. The Mike and Debbie Horne Vocational Scholarship and the Lineman of the Year Scholarship increase to $5,000 for two years. Students apply for the scholarships through their high school counselor.

“Giving out scholarship money is our favorite thing to do,” Sunrise Rotary President Trice Denny said. “Our Scholarship Committee and Foundation Board made an excellent decision to bump up our scholarship donations and we’re looking forward to awarding them to Key West students.”

The Key West Sunrise Rotary Club in the Conch Republic, established in 1988, provides community service, supports charities and funds college scholarships through events including BrewFest and a golf tournament. The club meets on Fridays at 7 a.m. at the Marriott Beachside Hotel.
