This month’s topic: Backyard Gardening in a Subtropical Paradise

Florida Keys Green Living and Energy Education’s seasonal speaker series continues Monday, Feb. 27, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Grimal Grove, 258 Cunningham Lane, Big Pine Key.

This month’s topic is Backyard Gardening in a Subtropical Paradise, featuring information on tropical fruit, vegetable gardening and composting. Arrive at 5 p.m. for a tour of the historic botanical site led by Grimal Grove director Patrick Garvey, followed by a meet and greet with complimentary nibbles and beverages by donation.

The speaker session will begin at 6 p.m. Speakers include Garvey, successful backyard gardeners Tammy and John Germain from Ramrod Key, and Kim Gabel, environmental horticulture agent for the UF/IFAS Monroe County Extension. There will be time for questions.

Nonprofit GLEE’s mission is to educate and inform the community about sustainable choices, and this new seasonal speaker series offers informal gatherings at which to learn, learn, connect and socialize. It’s a great way to catch up with people you know and to make new connections in your part of the Keys. Feel free to bring a friend; carpooling is encouraged.

The speaker series is free, and GLEE membership is not required to attend. Donations to support the grove’s mission are welcome.
