Mayor Danise “DeeDee” Henriquez and the Key West City Commission have proclaimed April 25th as Arbor Day.
Arbor Day is observed nationally to celebrate the role of trees in our lives and promote tree planting and care. The City of Key West recognizes the importance of trees and has been a member of the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA for 13 years.
During the month of April, students at Montessori Children’s School are working with the Key West Botanical Garden and the Monroe County Extension Service program on phase two of a project to correctly name, label, and tag the native trees in the Key West City Hall landscape.
On April 27th the Key West Botanical Garden — in collaboration with the City of Key West and the Monroe County Extension Service — will be holding an Eco-Arbor Day Fair from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. at the Garden on College Road. In addition, volunteers will be doing a cleanup on Friday April 25 at Mallory Square to participate in the celebration.
The proclamation was accepted by the Tropical Botanical Garden Executive Director Misha McRAE and the City’s Urban Forestry Manager Mckenzie Freley.
McRAE encouraged to community to come enjoy the fair to “celebrate springtime, celebrate the community, celebrate the Earth and the protection of it.”
