5th Annual Ball and Tableau Unveils as “Heart of the Sea”

KEY WEST, FLORIDA, FEBRUARY 19, 2019 – Celebrating a year of civic and charity efforts to support local organizations, the Mystick Krewe of Key West will stage its 5th Annual Bal Masque and Tableau Saturday, February 8, 2020, 7:00 – Midnight, under the stars at the Key West Amphitheater. The 300-member organization was founded in 2015 to provide locals with its own carnival celebration, adding a Key West twist of quirkiness and diversity for which the city is known.

“Our 2020 theme, “Heart of the Sea,” allows our members and guests to practice a time honored Key West tradition of attending a grand masquerade ball in exotic and elaborate costumes,” said ball chair, Kris Pabian. “Attendees will be treated to a lavish ocean motif affair with great local entertainers, dining and music to dance the night away.”

The highlight of the evening is the Krewe Tableau, styled after the grand French and New Orleans traditions where Lieutenants and Muses adorn the stage to form a visual representation of the year’s theme. As the court arrives, all anticipate the entrance of the King and Queen of 2020 Key West Mardi Gras, Mark Schoonover and Dee Johnson, escorted to the stage by local dignitaries and the Royal Court.

“We have worked hard to make the Key West Mardi Gras as elaborate and memorable as other carnival celebrations around the world,” said Krewe captain and Louisiana native, Val Marmillion. “Our costuming and decor is authentic and the Ball and Tableau rituals reflect the revelry and mirth associated with such events that suspend reality for a night and crown a mystical King and Queen. It is all for fun and partying with a purpose,” noted Marmillion.

The purpose and civic promises of the Krewe are found in a number of fundraising activities to support local charities. Since its founding, members have worked to raised and donate more than $300,000 to local organizations who provide services to families, children and needy causes. The Krewe is also proud of its continuing support for the Key West High School Band, making multi-year contributions to help ensure that band member march with new uniforms and bringing pride to the community in a 2020 trip to perform in Italy.

The Annual Key West Mardi Gras Ball is attended by Krewe of Key West Members and the public who wish to enjoy the spectacle of the carnival season. For a full Mardi Gras experience, General Admission tickets may be purchased for $165.00 per person, which includes dining, open bar, entertainment, and dancing, at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/5th-annual-key-west-mardi- gras-ball-masquerade-tickets-86938321861 .
