Island Dogs All-Stars Baseball Team Returns Victorious

The Island Dogs All-Star baseball team is joined at the podium by Commissioner Billy Wardlow, Coach Tyrone Cervantes, proclamation sponsor Commissioner Gregory Davila, Mayor Teri Johnston, and Commissioners Jimmy Weekley and Same Kaufman.

Key West’s Island Dogs All-Star baseball team was lauded Wednesday for ranking number two in the nation and number one in Florida for the 2020 season. In honor of their great accomplishment, Commissioner Gregory Davila and Mayor Teri Johnston proclaimed January 20th as Island Dogs Baseball Day.

The team is a group of 10 and under players, and their ranking was awarded by the United States Specialty Sports Association.

The team finished the spectacular season with a 10-game winning streak in their two final tournaments. Their overall records was 14-1.

The Island Dogs team is led by Head Coach Tyrone Cervantes, a Firefighter with the City of Key West, Assistant Coach Joe Conte, and managed by David Thibault.

Coach Cervantes noted that the team started up as a small eight-and-under recreational team, took their lumps, and ended up here.

“It’s been through hard dedication and a lot of work,” he said. “Way to go, Island Dogs!”
