Gun found at Key West airport

There were no arrests and no injuries reported after authorities found a handgun in a woman’s handbag while she was going through security at Key West International Airport Wednesday afternoon.

The Sheriff’s Office was notified at 4:24 p.m. that the X-ray operator observed what appeared to be a handgun in a woman’s bag. It turned out to be a .380 caliber Ruger LCP handgun. The magazine contained six rounds. There was not a bullet in the chamber.

The owner of the handgun, a 28-year-old Big Coppitt Key woman, stated she had inadvertently carried her concealed carry weapon with her in the aforementioned handbag. The woman stated she normally does not travel with that particular bag and forgot the gun was inside. A records check confirmed the woman does have a concealed weapons permit for Florida.

The Sheriff’s Office notified the State Attorney’s Office and the determination was made not to charge the woman as there was no intent to purposely carry the gun through the checkpoint.

The gun was placed into evidence and the woman was instructed to retrieve it upon her return to Monroe County.
