Fort Adventures Program for Toddlers & Parents Continue at Fort East Martello

Key West Art & Historical Society continues its weekly educational playdate program at Fort East Martello every Tuesday and Thursday through May from 10:00am to 12:00pm.  The program celebrates hands-on, inquiry-based learning while inviting children and parents to explore the Fort and its artifacts, dioramas, and immersive exhibits.

Led by early childhood educator Elizabeth Khun, each class focuses on a specific theme and a playful group circle that promotes creativity, sensory exploration and problem-solving.

“We cover a wide variety of topics and have a strong early literacy focus,” says Kuhn, who has spent several years running pre-k programs for up to twenty children ages three and four. “We use letter of the week themes to cover beginning science, math, history, geography, and more, all while building a strong foundation for reading skills.”

Though geared towards pre-school aged children, the program welcomes children of all ages, from birth through school age.

“Families love being able to bring infants along with older siblings and there are activities even babies can enjoy,” says Kuhn. “If we can instill in children a love of learning, then learning anything will be much easier and more fun for them.”

Children will also be able to enjoy the Imagination Playground, water play, and story time in the spectacular setting of the Martello tower.

“The idea behind providing a twice-weekly Parent & Me class at Fort East Martello is to offer parents and toddlers alternative options for social interaction and provide a stimulating learning environment,” says Adele Williams, Key West Art & Historical Society Director of Education.

“Most importantly we want children and families to take ownership of the museums, advocating and engaging friends and family in the art and history of the Florida Keys.”

Parent & Me Fort Adventures run from 10:00am to 12:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays through May and is $5 per family. For more information, visit kwahs.org/education/parentandmefortadventuresor call Adele Williams at 305.295.6616 extension 115. Your museums.  Your community.  It takes an island.
