Florida Keys Coronavirus Cases
The latest report from the Florida Department of Health shows there are 5 new cases today in Monroe County, including 3 more in Key West and one more in each – Tavernier and Missing City.

A majority of the infections are community-acquired. It is critical to wear a mask, avoid crowds, social distance, and wash your hands frequently.

Hospital capacity changes based on current patients and staffing. This is a very fluid situation and the figures can change throughout the day based on patient admissions and discharges. The presented numbers only show a snapshot of a single moment in time in a dynamic situation. Both Baptist and Lower Keys Medical are currently in the green, meaning they have enough supplies, staffing, and resources for the next 7 days or longer. When they go to yellow, it means they have fewer than 7 days, and red is for fewer than 3 days. Emergency Management is monitoring their needs on an ongoing basis.
The hospitals are currently managing the care of COVID-19 patients in care spaces at the hospitals that be expanded or contracted as needed. To date, neither hospital entity has had expand the spaces, but it is available if necessary. In the event of a significant surge of cases in our community, the hospitals and Emergency Management would work collaboratively with state health officials to identify other resources to provide care for those who need it. The Florida Dept of Health officially confirms new cases. Cases are a total count of all laboratory-confirmed cases. This number does not represent the current number of COVID-19 positive persons. At this time, the FDOH is unable to determine the number of recoveries from COVID-19. Those who do recover from the virus may have additional unknown health effects. Monroe County posts this Florida Department of Health information as a courtesy to inform residents.
Mandatory Facial Coverings in Public Settings:
Monroe County requires all persons over the age of six to wear a facial covering whenever away from their home and unable to engage in social distancing, whether indoors or outdoors. Every person over the age of six who is away from his or her residence shall carry a face-covering capable of immediate use.
The ordinance requires operators and employees of business establishments to ensure customers comply within the establishment. A face covering MUST cover the nose and mouth and may include a face mask, homemade mask, or other cloth, silk, or linen covering, such as a scarf, bandana, handkerchief, or other similar cloth covering. There is an exception for those seated at a restaurant while eating or drinking, and for gym and barbershop patrons. Exceptions can be found at www.monroecountyem.com/covid19.
The mandatory facial covering directive applies throughout Monroe County and the municipalities, but the municipalities may impose additional restrictions. Key West does have a stricter facial covering requirement for those to wear a facial covering regardless of social distancing while outside the home.
The State of Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) still has in effect its emergency order prohibiting alcoholic beverage sales for consumption on premises by bars. Under DBPR’s order, restaurants including those with liquor licenses must limit indoor dining to 50 percent capacity of their indoor seating capacity and continue to follow social distancing requirements. Countywide Nightly Closures of Restaurants and Package Stores:
There is a countywide closure of restaurants nightly from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. and alcohol package sales are prohibited nightly from 11 p.m. until 7 a.m. (in conjunction with the normal 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. alcohol sale ban) through Wednesday, Aug. 19, that could potentially be renewed. The closures and alcohol sales will be in effect throughout the county and municipalities unless a municipality enacts different rules.
Monroe County revised plan for vacation rentals during COVID-19 was accepted over the weekend by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). The new plan includes capacity limitations, local management contact, and signage requirements. The restrictions will remain in effect until the Governor removes statewide restrictions on vacation rentals. More info at www.monroecountyem.com/covid19 under “Lodging and Vacation Rentals.”
A law enforcement officer may arrest or issue a notice to appear for any knowing and intentional violations committed in his or her presence or through an arrest warrant. Violations shall be prosecuted by the State Attorney of the 16th Judicial Circuit. A person found in violation may be punished by up to 60 days in the County jail and/or a fine of up to $500.
The amendment allows a county or municipal code compliance officer, as well as a law enforcement officer, upon observation of a violation, to issue a notice to appear or civil citation to appear in County Court. Any person or business establishment prosecuted under this subsection and found in violation of this ordinance may be punished by a fine of up to $500. Code officers can also issue an administrative notice of violation with fines of up to $1,000 for a first offense and $5,000 for a repeat offense. Each day a violation of this ordinance occurs is considered a separate offense.
