FKSPCA: RESCUE TAILS / “RASCAL”

BY TAMMY FOX-ROYER
Executive Director Florida Keys SPCA

I like to believe that there is an ideal home for just about any animal that comes into the shelter. Sometimes it just takes some time to find the perfect match. This was the case with Rascal.

Rascal was born in the Keys into a big brood of look-alike siblings. Rascal was the only dog in the litter that the family decided to keep and Rascal did fine as a little puppy. But young dogs with high energy and bright minds can get into trouble if they don’t have enough to do and that was what happened to Rascal. Left alone all day, Rascal became a master at escaping his yard and was brought into the shelter many, many times. Rascal’s search for adventure was too much for his family and they decided to surrender him to us permanently.

Along came Charlene, who owns a guest house on an island in Maine and was visiting Key West for a few months with her daughter. Rascal’s sweetness caught Charlene’s eye and the love affair began at once. We explained Rascal’s need for adventure and after multiple visits, Charlene decided this was the right dog for her.

Rascal certainly understood because when Charlene came to get Rascal, he pranced out the door of the shelter and jumped right into the car. Charlene has reported back that Rascal has made many new friends in Maine – both 4-legged and 2-legged. His search for adventure has been rewarded and has even encountered his first moose!

From the southernmost island to one of the most northernmost, Rascal and Charlene are truly a match made in heaven.

I want to thank everyone who has so generously donated their time, hard work and money to saving our animals before, during and after Hurricane Irma. And if you’d like to help us make sure we never have to go through this again, please donate to our new hurricane-resistant shelter building fund by going to www.FKSPCA.org.
