Donald Trump Hides His Taxes, Carlos Curbelo Hides His Lobbying Clients

Miami, FL—The Republican Party’s standard-bearer, Donald Trump, has been under fire recently for refusing to release his tax returns during his bid for the U.S. presidency. Recent reports have suggested Trump might have not paid any federal income taxes from 1995 to 2013. Like the leader of his party, Carlos Curbelo is also keeping secrets, particularly the client list for his lobbying firm, Capitol Gains LLC.

On the Miami-Dade School Board, Curbelo voted on issues affecting our children while also lobbying for his mystery clients. One of Curbelo’s known clients was the international Malaysian casino giant, Genting Group, which had interests in property near the School Board. Curbelo transferred ownership of his company over to his wife in order to avoid federal disclosure laws.

Carlos Curbelo and Donald Trump both have a history of hiding their business dealings, especially when it hurts the interests of the people they are elected to serve.

“It’s concerning when candidates like Donald Trump and Carlos Curbelo refuse to disclose what secret special interests they are representing,” said Joe Garcia, Candidate for Florida’s 26th Congressional District. “The people of District 26 deserve to know whether Mr. Curbelo is working to represent them, or his lobbying clients.”

Curbelo is no stranger to selling out for special interests. He has received tens of thousands of dollars from the gun lobby and has voted in near lockstep against gun reform that would protect families from terrorists and criminals, receiving a top score from the NRA and a “lap dog” of the NRA award from the Brady Campaign. He is also a favorite of the oil, coal, and natural gas industries, having voted to approve the Key Stone XL Pipelineto protect oil drilling on public lands and to allow for the contamination of our water and air by toxic coal waste.

The people of District 26 deserve to know who their congressman really works for. Who are Rep. Curbelo’s other clients?

Joe Garcia served South Florida in Congress from 2013 to 2015.  He is currently running for election against Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo in a Congressional District that has been redrawn and favors Democrats. National and local Democrats have invested heavily in Garcia, with the DCCC placing $5 million in television ads that are currently running in the district.  Joe Garcia is beating Curbelo in the most recent poll.
